Whenever Grampa Siglin was furlowed (layed off) from the Railroad, he would repair radios and TVs to support his family. Notice the phone number. When Dad and I were growing up the first two numbers were represented by letters signifying the location of the phone line. RE stood for Regent, not sure what that signified, but that was what it was. When telling someone what our phone # was, we would say Regent 2-8762 and everyone would know that the first two numbers were 7 3, which they still are in Elmira. When that practice was discontinued, it took years for us to get used to not saying Regent or RE as part of a phone number!
After meeting Doug Colborn, he and Grampa started the C & S Electronics business repairing CB radios. This friendship lasted until both have passed on. What wonderful memories Dad has of watching and 'helping' them in the basement of Dad's home! This is where Dad got his start in becoming an electronics repair and design man as well as his love for world wide communications! When we were fist married he had a C.B. radio in our apartment, but the foul language was too much for me, so he became more interested in Amateur radio, also called Broadband or Ham radio. After pouring over some really old radio magazines, he has designed and is now building an honest to goodness 'antique' public radio station in our basement... from 'scratch' and having a blast doing it!! The pleasure for him is more in the designing and building than the actual use. :) He is so blessed to have such a fun hobby for which he can thank his father and his father's best friend!
