Vladimir Volkoff is the actual name of the author.
From the inside cover: "Was he actually a dedicated Communist, posing as a priest while he reported the secrets of the confessional? Or had his twenty-year masquerade converted him, against his will, into a true believer in Christ? Whatever his real vocation, some men would call him 'the traitor' - but who knew if they spoke the truth?"
What a fascinating depiction of intrigue and subversion. A Russian spy is assigned to become a priest to uncover a plot by the Catholic Church to undermine the newly formed government, but the faith in which he is immersed begins to affect his original dedication to the party, and subsequent political changes cause confusion and turmoil. Very well written!
